5-Amino-1MQ

The scene's fat-loss molecule — hyped as a peptide, yet it isn't one at all

In 10 seconds

5-Amino-1MQ isn't a peptide at all but a small lab molecule that slows down a certain enzyme in fat tissue. In the biohacking scene it's seen as an insider tip for losing weight. The problem: everything known about it comes from experiments with mice — in humans there's not a single published study.

What is it, really?

Picture a small switch in your fat cells: the enzyme NNMT, which helps determine how much energy is burned. 5-Amino-1MQ is a lab-built molecule that slows down this switch. In mice the body thereby burned more fat — even without the animals eating less. It's mostly sold as a so-called research chemical, so officially only for research, not as a medicine. And although it's often named in the same breath as peptides, chemically it's something completely different.

Structure

A chain built from amino acids

Target area

Fat metabolism & body fat (animal research)

Evidence

Animal studies

Human studies

Only animal data — no published human studies

What fans report

Claims — not proof

  • Supposed to burn fat without having to eat less (mouse findings, transferred to humans by fans)
  • Traded as an insider tip for losing weight and for higher energy turnover
  • Some link it to a fitter metabolism in old age

The reality check

What the facts say

  • Not approved as a medicine anywhere — a pure research substance
  • There's not a single published study in humans; the hope rests solely on animal experiments
  • The enzyme NNMT intervenes broadly in metabolism — what it triggers in humans in the long run is completely unclear
  • Grey-market goods: purity and even the identity of the powder are untested
  • Sold as a "fat-loss peptide" although it's neither a peptide nor do human data exist

Risk assessment

Unclear

Not because it's considered safe — but because for humans every study is simply missing to even assess it.

Legal status: Not approved for humans

Bottom line

An exciting metabolism topic from the lab, but miles away from a proven weight-loss remedy. For applying it to yourself, that's far too little — questions like these belong in a doctor's hands.
